The Tragedy of the Sin, The Dawning of a New Hope
And she turned to him in half apology, with a look that said: "I never really loved you". He felt the tension in his muscles leave him completely; his eyes rusted over, he turned on his heel, and he walked away.
He let his jacket fall from his frame, he rid himself of the tie, and he kicked off the uncomfortable shoes as he continued to travel up the sidewalks of the city. In his mind, he was alone.
Suddenly a hand grasped his shoulder and he was forced back to reality. He looked up at the face of his best man without saying a word. Their eyes met, and he stood there removing his own tie and jacket, swinging it over his shoulder. He left his shoes on.
It started to rain, it would have been shocking had it not. They walked together ignoring the stares from the crowd as their shirts became soaked clinging to their skin. They walked in silence for long hours until they reached the outskirts of the city finding a normally popular park by the waterfront and sat in the grass. What had the groom to lose now? What more could the best man say?
The ring on his finger glittered in the rain. The best man picked up the groom's hand examining it and slipping it off. He placed it in the palm of his hand and nodded at the water front. With his eyes, he said "Do it"
The groom stood and walked calmly to the edge of the water and pitched the ring as far as he could. It was gone.
The best man stood to join him. Now they were both soaked to the bone; not a part of them was spared the cold rain. Neither reacted.
There they stood contemplating the end of a long chapter, and the beginning of their own.
That day, a kiss on the ring finger was all it took, and their lives were changed forever.
