Riddles
The shadow traveled a long hallway with doors and stairways leading to mysterious places. This shadow was an essence which had stayed well hidden in a maze of complexity. It wasn't really a shadow, this was just a veil to keep outsiders from seeing it clearly while easily seeing out. This shadow knew things of the universe even outside the maze. It would occasionally glimpse others like itself when its maze would combine with another. Mazes would often meld, some more complex than the others, but each unique in its entirety. Each maze held an essence, some were shrouded, some were not. In this realm, no two things were alike, although they might appear to be at first glance. Often these universes would collide and influence each other, but more often than not, they would drift away once more only to encounter new universes with their own mazes and essences.
This shadow had traveled its own maze hidden from the world it inhabited. It was the essence of that world, but that was a universe all its own, and had not even begun to scratch the surface of recognizing its own interior workings. There were many a universe- too many to count. Much like stars in the sky. The shadow liked the stars, it also liked rain. It liked music, and it believed in many beautiful things, but it also knew sadness, it also knew despair. It knew many things because it was everything come together about its particular universe.
Sometimes the shadow would whisper into the expanse of its universe hoping to be heard. It would ask for adventure, and it would ask for company. It liked glimpsing other essences- glimpsing was usually the best fellow essences could do. Too many universes would collide and split apart too quickly to really have time to become properly acquainted. Even the worlds that did stay around longer made little difference because of the mazes composing them. The shadow had tried to reach out to many essences it had come into contact with only to find that by the time it had found a way through the others' maze, it was too late, and that universe had moved on. Eventually all essences resign themselves to their loneliness, but there was always a glimmer of hope. This shadow drew hope from the things it loved, which were gifts it would see through its universe. The shadow felt more deeply, more passionately, more painfully, more lovingly than anything it had encountered in all of the maze, and the more it felt, the more the maze would grow and change. As an essence of a universe, it affected everything around it. Through the entanglement with another universe, feelings would fluctuate depending on the external exchange between the shadow's universe and the other.
The maze this shadow lived in was a complex mixture of light and dark with colors completely outside of anything mortals could comprehend. Reflections, projections, mirror images, memories, voices, perceptions, mentalities, sounds and time. spiral staircases, dark dungeons, brilliant aviaries, glass rooms, dusty old book shelves, and so much more. There were complete cities made up of a single feeling, towns built out of emotion, undergrounds made up of memories. It all connected and shot off in different directions. A world within a world unto itself.
However, despite the great complexities, once in what we might call a blue moon, a maze would come along that was complimentary to the shadow's own, and only then would the shadow have the chance to truly meet another essence. And one day, this shadow did. There was never a guarantee of meeting the other essence, but when mazes did complement each other, essences were much more likely to chance upon the other. There was also no guarantee that the mazes would truly stay complimentary because everything occurring externally would create more emotion. This shadow had seen it happen to its universe before. To a degree all essences feared contact with others because the exchange could truly be devastating. Just as this shadow felt more deeply than anything it had ever encountered, this was true of any essence. Ergo, the collision of two worlds' mazes, furthermore their respective essences, had apocalyptic potential.
Despite this, there was also a deep desire for something new, a curiosity, and a sense of adventure. Despite the fear, despite the shyness, essences truly yearned for other essences. The shadow had often whispered out into its universe hoping to be heard by another essence in its own domain.
And so, the shadow proceeded to explore the maze currently linked with its own. Slowly it walked unfamiliar hallways, fell through trap doors, lifted itself through port holes, climbed, flew, scaled and trudged until it glimpsed something that may well have been a misperception, but still it followed in the direction it thought to have seen something. At the turn of a corner, it met face to face, another shadow. They stood stalk still twitching warily. There was a sudden deathly silence that could have been cut with a knife. Neither moved for a moment until the stranger shadow relaxed itself outstretching its hand. The shadow hesitated and cautiously reached out until its hand was shaking the stranger's. There was a jolt that traveled between them, which was normal for essences which were just meeting. It was a quick exchange of basic intuitions that passed to and from the other. They pulled away once more and stood staring again.
At this point, all they could do was wait to see if this would last long enough for them to bond. It is impossible for two separate essences to become one, and entirely impossible for them to fuse more than maybe the tiniest fibers of their existence, and this fusion can only occur after great emotional exchanges in the external universes. Knowing this, both shadows sat facing the other without saying a word. They simply were aware of each other.
Time passed, and as it did, the stranger's veil began to dissolve. Little by little, its colors began to shine through. Bright, playful, bubbly and mysterious colors. All of which swirled around in the most delicate encasing of what appeared to blown glass. The shadow noticed that its own veil had started to dissolve, but much more slowly. It only revealed glimpses of colors which were just as dazzling and full of mystery. It was terrified, but excited. These feelings were strong between the two shadows, but excitement seemed to be most prevalent.
In time they were able to speak, and they soon realized that there was nothing more to do than enjoy their freedom together as their veils continued to dissolve, and the interactions of their worlds reshaped them and thus their mazes. Together they walked their newly created nooks, crannies, cities, towns and trap doors. One day they even went as far as holding hands throughout their explorations.
Although they still do not know where their encounter will lead them, or how long their worlds will be entangled, they are together, occasionally sitting hand in hand, watching the horizon through their universes. They know only time will tell what's to come, but they accept that no matter what the tides may bring, they will simply enjoy the ride.
If you listen carefully enough, you may be able to hear a tiny whisper. Not quite a voice, not quite articulate-simply a whisper. Whimsical in its character, but there. Listen, and maybe you'll feel.
