Couples walked hand in hand. Women with other women and men with other men. That was the way of things. They were taught from an early age that reproduction was for survival of the species, so in order to bring forth a new generation science had long ago discovered the art of artificial insemination. Men would donate their sperm, and in the case of a couple of two women one would bear the child; in the case of two men, a close friend would agree to bear his child and share the child's up-bringing with the couple of men.
It was sacred in their society, this way of living. However, there were always the odd ones who would go astray. A boy would be attracted to a girl instead of another boy, and vice-versa. Heterosexuality had caused rebel break-outs, civil brawls, protests and the like.
That's what Rachel had seen on the Television as her mothers were working in the kitchen to make dinner. She never gave it a second thought until she started having the same problem. There was a boy at school who she was close friends with, and before she knew it she had started to feel something stronger than friendship grow between them. One time in class, as they were sitting in the very back row where all eyes were facing the front, he had reached out and put his hand over hers. She had felt fire shoot up her arm as her face went flush red. What would she do if anyone saw? Heterosexual relationships were labelled as wrong in their society. But why should it be wrong?
Rachel looked over her shoulder at her two mothers from the couch where she sat in the living room watching the news. They looked happy together. Even though they would argue sometimes, they were her family as well as most functional families she knew. Sure she'd gone out with other girls, but she never felt the way she did about any of them like she did about the boy who held her hand in class.
One day Rachel invited William over, with her parent's permission of course, and they played video games together. They talked, they laughed and... they kissed for the first time. Just then Rachel's father equivalent walked in and saw them. She only gasped, turned on her heel and went to find her spouse.
"Margaret!" She called in through their doorway.
"Yes dear?" She called back.
"Our daughter, she's in the living room kissing a boy." Susan wasted no time to get straight to the point.
Margaret's jaw dropped and she felt her knees weaken under her. She found the nearest chair and let herself fall into it.
"A boy? Our little girl is heterosexual...?"
Susan nodded.
"Where did we go wrong?" Margaret asked lifting her eyes to her wife's.
Susan took a seat on the edge of the bed and took Margaret's hand squeezing it comfortingly.
"So what if she's hetero! There was a time when I liked a boy too, back in the day."
Margaret was quiet for a moment, then said, "Now that you mention it, I went through that phase too. And we know old Mr. Roger who is happily married to Mrs. Lucy."
Susan nodded. "See? Now, instead of chastising our little girl for who she is, we have to support her. And no more labeling heterosexuality. It has a name, and that name is love."
Margaret nodded, although still daunted by the recent discovery.
"This should be fun." She sighed finally and stood pulling Susan with her. "Shall we go greet Rachel's boyfriend then?"
"We shall, we shall."
