We'll Lead the Way

Together the two girls held out a hand to the detective. One with dark almost black eyes and the other with deep blue ones. Respectively, the first was smiling a small smile while the second gave a wide grin and said:
"You don't have to feel so alone. We'll teach you how to have fun." The grinning girl said.
"You have the basics down: you love sweets. Now for the rest of the repertoire." The dark eyes shined with her words.

The detective reached out slowly, unaccustomed to the friendly offers. However, he had long ago learned from these two that there were those in the world who he could feel at home with even if they hadn't grown up trained to be geniuses. They had proven their worth with their loyalty and their kindness. Somehow, they were able to understand him, even if it was only on an imagined level. They could only know what little they'd seen of his suffering, but from that they could clearly tell what he needed.

L finally reached both hands offered him and couldn't explain what feeling overcame him as their fingers wrapped around his gently and pulled him forward.

"Time to let your heirs take charge, and time for you to see everything you've missed out on." The blue-eyed girl said.

"Welcome to the real world," the nearly-black eyed girl said smirking, "it sucks. You'll love it."

L didn't quite understand it all yet, but he trusted these two... Somehow. What ever the case, he walked in step with one girl on either side of him and curled his fingers around theirs in return. For the first time in a long time, L smiled.

"Shall we get some cake to celebrate my retirement then?"

Okay, so lately I've had L on my mind, and more so while reading the written novels. His life and emotions are a mystery to the world, but you get to know this character on a sort-of intrinsic level, and somehow you just know that after Kira, L needs a break.
Thanks Yash for bringing back all the reasons why I love this character. And due to our many discussions on the way Death Note SHOULD have ended, I decided that you and I had to be involved. I'm sure you can imagine the rest of the story on your own.
